for
Erecting and finishing a
Building to contain Mr Babbage's Calculating Engine, Workshops, &c.
and of Alterations and repairs to the adjoining House in East Street
Manchester Square.

Specification for Erecting
and finishing a Building to contain Mr Babbage's calculating Engine,
Workshops, &c. and of alterations and repairs to the adjoining House
in East Street Manchester Square according with the drawings
accompanying marked from 1 to 8 [drawings missing] and from such detail
drawings as may be provided by the Architect during the Progress of the
Works.
6 Spring Garden Nov 12th 1831
The present South of East
fence Walls of the open space of ground where tinted red on the plan to
be taken down. The other fence walls to be underpinned if found
necessary. The roof back wall &c. of the back buildings to the House
in East Street to be also taken down as well as the stairs on Ground
Story passage, partition fittings &c., that may require to be
removed in order to effect the alterations shewn by the drawings -the
materials to be cleaned and piled and such of them as are sound and fit
for the purpose will be allowed to be reused -the remainder to be carted
away and to be the property of the Contractor.
Digger
Dig out the ground for the
concrete walls and space under the floors &c. as shewn by the
Section; also for sewers, drains, cesspools, and other digging that may
be found needful fill in and ram the ground round the footings and
drains as the Brickwork proceeds.
Dig out the ground in passage
to form a carriage way from East Street with a regular declinity. Shore
up the adjoining walls if found necessary for underpinning (see
Bricklayers). Cart away all superfluous earth and rubbish as it may
accumulate during the progress of the works, and leave all clear at the
finishing of the job. the trenches of the Walls are to be dug on a level
and of the depth shewn by the section. The foundations are to be
approved by the Architect before the Brickwork is commenced.
The whole of the yards and carriage way to be formed to the several levels reqd
and a layer of dry brick rubbish laid over the same 6 ins in thickness,
and afterwards a layer of Granite broken stones not execeeding ¼ Cube
laid on in layers 3" thick and every layer well rammed and rolled.
Hoard
Erect a substantial Hoard in
East Street to enclose the front and return ends to project 6 feet from
the line of Area railing and to be 9 feet high, to be formed with ¼
deal boarding close jointed, and uniform with proper ports, rails and
Gates with fastenings &c. that may be found necessary.
Provide a watchbox for the
Gatekeeper with a bell weights and pullies, also a box for the drawings
and a stool and desk for the Clerk of the Works.
Concrete
Include in the estimate 150 yards cube of concrete in the proportions of 1/7 dorking lime to 6/7
well washed river Gravel and mixed together while hot and shot into the
trenches in layers not exceeding 9" in thickness, and every layer well
rammed. Should the whole or only part [del: not] be required a deduction
will be made from the amount of contract at the rate of 8/6 pr yard
cube including digging.
Bricklayer
All the walls are to built
with the best hard burnt Grey Stocks (a sample of which is to be shewn
to the Architect and approved previous to any quantity being carted to
the premises). The mortar to be compounded of the best stone lime or
other of equal quality [del:as] that shall be first approved by the
Architect and good Thames sand taken from above Vauxhall Bridge, mixed
in the proportion of one Bushel of Lime to two bushels of sand, well
beaten and tempered together in a [word unreadable: Passmill?]
constantly kept full and labourers to beat it up after passing through
the same. The cement to be from a Manufactory approved by the Architect,
and to be mixed in the proportion of three bushels of cement to five
bushels of river sand well washed.
All the footings, walls,
Chimnies &c. are to be carried up the height, thickness &c.
shewn and figured on the several drawings, leaving all apertures as
herein described -bring forward all brickwork for Corbels and other
projections as may be requisite. The four courses to rise more than 11 3/4" and every course to be closely bedded and well flushed up.
All the external Brickwork to
be faced with picked stocks of a regular shape and uniform colour, laid
with a neat flat parallel joint and rule jointed, the external Arches to
the openings and blanks to be 12" in the face guaged and set in Putty.
The underside of all the Arches and the reveals to the external openings
to be stuccoed with roman cement and painted five times in oil.
Turn inverted Arches in 3 half
bricks under all the openings of Ground story and also similar
discharging Arches in roman cement over all openings where sufficient
height and abutment can be obtained.
Build the drains as shewn by
the plans. Carry up Cesspools in one brick in Cement under each bell
trap and rendered inside in Cement. Provide and fix proper 6["] cast
iron bell traps properly rebated into stone paving where shewn in plan,
all the drains to be built in roman cement. The main drain to be
continued from the Building to join the Common Sewer in East Street (the
space from the Building to main sewer) to be of the size and
construction as may be required by the Commissioners of Sewers and a
strong cast iron grating to be fixed in do to stop the vermin -all the
drains to be properly trapped. In digging should any old drains be
discovered the same are to be taken up -the bricks which are sound may
be reconverted -but such drains as may be required for the drainage of
any of the adjoining premises, to be reinstated and made perfect in
every respect.
Turn arches in two half bricks
in cement over the calculating room, Engine room, and passage adjoining
from Iron and Stone openings with 1 3/4 tension
rods which are described by the drawings, the spandrills to be filled up
solid in Cement and the whole surface to be raised up with brickwork
in cement to form the several levels required and rendered over on top
with Roman Cement at least 1" in the thickness. Build stone skew Backs
in the walls for abutments of Arches and put 1½" wrought iron tie rods
with nutts and plates where drawn to prevent the spreading of the
Arches. Put stone template 14" by 24" of 6" thick run with lead to
receive the iron springers.
Parquet the flues and case the
same at the completion of the works, set in each of the new and old
fireplaces a Grate and Stoves which will be provided.
Bring forward Brickwork and
provide 6 Inch York Stone Corbles where required to carry Jambs and
fire places pinned into the Walls in cement at least 12 ins.
Turn Arches in two half bricks in Cement over all fireplace openings on wrought Iron Bars 2 f 3/8 to go through the Jambs and turn up and down two Inches -turn Trimmers in half a brick in Cement to carry hearths.
Put Cement Chimney Pots to
each of the new flues and reinstate such to the old flues as may be
required and the whole of the pots (old and new) to be set and planched
in plain tiles in Cement. Leave 50 air holes and fix an Iron Grate box
in each 9 x 3 for the free circulatin of air under the floors.
The two courses of Brickwork
directly under the ground floors and the two courses under the stone
Coping of parapets to be built in cement the joints of the latter to be
raked out and pointed as other brickwork.
The workshop on the Ground
Story and Cole cellar of dweling House to be paved withhard brick on
edge the ground to be properly filled in and levelled with hard dry
brick rubbish and lime core to receive the same.
Grout the whole of the walls
through out every fifth course, the grout to be made up as that
described for the mortar and well mixed in a proper Tub, care to be
taken that the external walls be not defaced by this operation.
All the walls to be built
regularly round scaffold high, before other parts are raised and covered
up every Evening when required with straw hurdles to prevent the
weather from damaging the building.
The north wall of the Engine
Room to be built to receive a sash and frame in case it should be
requisite, and to be filled up flush with brickwork and arch in Cement
over the same as to other windows. The North wall of the Dwelling House
and back buildings to be repaired and made good.
The whole of the external
Brickwork of the premises intended to remain including the Chimney
Shafts and fence walls to be repaired made good and flat joint pointed
the joints being previously raked out -the whole of the front next East
Street to be raked out flat and tack pointed the inside of all the old
parapets to be rendered with Roman Cement. Empty the Cesspools and clear
away the soil.
Make good all damage done to
either of the adjoining premises in consequence of performing the works
set forth in this specification.
Build Piers in Cement on
footings as before described the size figured on the Plans to carry the
bressemers of the back and front walls to the Dwelling House, put 3 Inch
York Stone Templates on Do.
The whole of the walls of the Workshops the Carriage Way and Coach Cellar to be pointed and double lime whited.
Underpin the North Party walls
of Dwelling House with brickwork in Cement occasioned by forming the
Carriage Way from East Street. The underpinnings to be of whole
thickness of the incumbent brickwork built from two courses of footings
to be built on the level of the foundations in lengths shewn by the
dotted lines on the drawings and stepped at every length, so as to
divide the difference of level in equal parts.
Carry up the Brickwork in
Cement in front next East Street to form Pilasters Entablature &c.
as shewn by the Elevations; bring froward the Brickwork for Cornices
-turn a 12 inch brick arch over the openings in Cement on a wrought
iron cradle in two ribs, constructed with wrought Iron 1½ by ½ let into
6" York stone templates bedded on the Brick Pilasters and let into the
present wall.
The division wall between the
Carriage way and Passage for workmen and Dwelling House to be wholly
built in Cement the part under the level of the paving of the Dwelling
&c. to be built 1ft 10" in thickness on footing, and in similar
manner as described for the party wall on the opposite side of the
carriage way.
[Del: The opening at west end
of carriage way to have a cradle over the same formed with wrought iron
1½ by ½ in two ribs, with similar horizontal and connecting ties,
secured on 6" York stone templates and run with lead turn 3 round arches
over the same in cement from Portland Stone and prizers the height
required and 1ft 2" square on the bed.]
Cut away the present
projecting Brickwork in Carriage way through Dwelling House and make
good the same, the Jambs of fireplace above to be supported by stone
Corbels before described and all other brickwork connected with the same
to be made perfect in every respect.
Leave [word unreadable: chan?]
in Brickwork of party wall, on a level of the present wall and cope the
same with 3" York stone pinned into the new work 3 inches to prevent
the wet penetrating between the two walls.
Remove the door between Mr.
Babbage's Garden and these premises -Cut away the Brickwork, make good
the same in Cement, refix the door and frame and make all complete.
Cut out for doorways where
shewn on plan to form a communication from the calculating room to Mr.
Babbage's premises. Provide and fix 3["] fir Lintholes, make good the
Jamb in cement and turn a 9" Brick Arch over the openings.
Build the necessary primings
in Brick on one course of footings to carry the stone pavings, sleepers,
Hearths &c. Cut chase and parqet where required to connect the old
and new work -include in the Estimate 1½ Cwt of Wrot iron for
any ties that may be required and should the same or only part be
required a deduction will be made from the amount of contract at the
rate of 6d [per] lb.
Bed all plates and other
timbers and bed and point the sash and door frames in lime and hair;
point all round lead flashings in cement.
Cut out where required for
joists, Girders or other timbers, and securely fix in the same with
cement. Carry up all funnels (not particularly described) for water or
other pipes, and execute all other work that may be required to render
the Bricklayer's work complete.
Include in the estimate
exclusive of all works mentioned in this Specification Three Rods of
Brickwork in Mortar for extra works, and if the whole any part thereof
should not be wanted, a deduction will be made from the amount of the
contract at the rate of Fourteen Pounds per rod for the omission.
Slater
Cover the new roof of the Back
Buildings to the Dwelling House in East Street and the Workshops with
best Dutchess Slates laid to a proper guage and nailed with 2 inch
copper nails two to each slate.
Examine and repair the present Roof and leave the whole of the premises perfectly water tight.
Carpenter
See the fir to be the best brown memel Rija or Dantzic, sawn true to the scantlings required.
The Deals to be yellow
Petersburgh or Giffle. The oak to be of English growth. All the timber
and deals to be free from dead knots, sap or shakes, and to be generally
long lengths.
Bond Timber -Put two tier of oak chain Bond 4x3 in the walls of the Engine and Calculating Room throughout put tier of Do
in Ground and one pair stories of the Workshops and staircases, also
two tier in the wall next entrance passage. The new walls of Dwelling
House to have two tier of fir bond 4x2½ part circular the bond to
continue round all the walls to be hooklapped at the joints and
dovetailed at the Angles and to be connected where prevented by flues
with Iron ties 2 by ½" secured with proper nails.
Plates -Put for plates 6
by 4 throughout the floors except to the calculating room Building to
run round all the walls, and connected through the flues as the bond
timbers scarped at the joints and hooklapped at the angles.
Linthols -Put for
Linthols over all the Doors and Windows the width of and 2 feet longer
than the respective openings and 5" thick. The openings of the
workshops to have 6" linthols and to continue through the pier to serve
as wall plates and to form a continued tie, to be pieced on the piers
and secured with wrought iron bolts and screws, and the plates of the
returned walls dovetailed into the same.
Floors -Put for girders
under the floor of workshop one pair story 14x12 cut reversed and bolted
and secured on the plate, and to have 12" bearing on the walls the
Joists to run the length of the Building 9x2¼. The Joists of the new
portion of the Dwelling House to be 10x2¼ properly strutted all trimmers
to be 1" thicker. The Joists forming floor of Water Closet, Staircase,
Landing &c. of Dwelling House to be 7 by 2½.
Roofs of Workshops} The Roofs to be constructed as

The Ceiling Joists in the Calculating room to be 5 by 2½ wedged into and secured to the Iron girders as will be directed.
The Lead flat over the
staircase of Dwelling House to have fir Joists and wall plates as
described for the floors. 1¼ batten hoarding close jointed with fir
rings to form the [Word unreadable: Cussent?]. Put proper lead rolls and
rebates for Gutters.
Frames for Skylights where
shewn on drawings and provide and fix 1½ deal dovetailed frames guide
raised 6" above the roof and the part round formed with [word
unreadable: Ashlaring] for Plastering with 3/4
bead level with ceiling, those over passage and inner room of Dwelling
House to have 2" deal straight bar lights, hung with 3½ Bolts and
Screws, lines, Pullies &c. complete. The staircase to have a metal
slipped skylight to drawing fixed to the frame before described with
ventilator, lines, pullies &c. complete.
The nosing round part of the
Calculating and Engine Room to be formed with fir 9x5 worked on edge and
well spiked to oak bricks built into the wall.
Provide two strong step ladders to ascend to the roofs with Iron hooks &c. painted four times in oil.
Put 3/4
battens for slates 3" wide 1¼ deal Gutter boards and bearers with proper
2" drips not more than ten feet apart and current for water 2" in 10
feet. Put Cesspool head where required for rain water pipes. Form the
Gutters in roof over Calculating room and Engine room, with similar
boards and bearers and provide and fix all fillers and filling pieces
required.
The dripping Eaves of the Buildings shewn by the Drawing to be lined with 3/4 deal matched and beaded boarding with square fillets under slates.
The partitions to be formed as shewn in the plans to be framed and braced and of the following Scantlings
Head and bill each 4 x 3
Posts 4 x 4
Quarters 4 x 2½
Beams 4 x 3
Door Head 4 x 4
The front and back wall of the
present Dwelling House and also the back wall of the new part of the
same to be supported by fir girders 12 by 12 cut reversed and bolted let
into the wall at each end at least one foot in oak templates 3 feet
long 8 by 6 well pinned into the wall. The partition next the staircase
to be also supported by a fir girder 10 by 6 and bedded in the wall in
like manner. The parts of the Girders before mentioned to be eased with 3/4 glued and beaded linings scribed to ceilings.
Provide and fix all iron ties
that may be necessary to connect the old and new wood works also all
proper centering turning and discharging pieces, templates, blocks,
molds fillets &c. The Joists to have 6" bearing on the several
walls, cut all necessary holes for Plumbers and other workmen.
The Bond Timber not to be cut
out of the respective openings, nor the [del: Trimming] turning pieces
and centering to be struck until ordered by the Architect.
No joists, quarters or rafters to be more than 12" apart.
The stalls of the calculating
room to be battened for laths with battens 12" apart of 2¼ wide properly
fixed to the walls -and bond timber which are to project ½ an Inch
before the face of the Walls for the purpose of receiving the same.
Case all the pipes seen in the Dwelling House with 3/4
deal, beaded on edge and secured to the walls, the length of pipe in
Coal Cellar to be cased with Inch Oak and also well secured to the wall.
Provide all additional Timber
required to complete the Dwelling House, examine and repair the roof of
the same, also all Gutters and whatever may be required to complete the
Carpenter's Work.
To include in the Contract 50 feet cube fir 50 feet supl of 1¼ and 50 ft supl
of Inch deal [word unreadable: Frot?] both sides with all labor and
nails &c. for fixing for any extra work that may be ordered and if
the whole or any part thereof should not be wanting a deduction will be
made from the contract at the rate of 3s/9d a foot for the fir, 8d for
the inch and 9d for the 1¼" deal.
Joiner's Work
The Deal to be the best
Christiana or of other deals of equal quality free from sap, dead knots,
or shakes and to be well seasoned, all the outsidework to be yellow
deal.
Floors -The floor of
the Workshop to be 1½ rough yellow deal edges shot and laid folding -the
Calculating room to have a similar floor wrought and laid with straight
joints in oak joists, and sleepers 5 by 3. The floors of the back
buildings of Dwelling House, Water Closet &c. to be inch white Deal
wrought and laid straight joint -make good all others that may have been
affected by the alterations or from any other means so as to complete
the whole in every respect. Put mitred and glued boards round fireplaces
in those rooms described to have wrought floors.
Put inch deal square skirting
7" high to the dwelling house, Passage, Water Closet, and Room over the
present Water Closet in Garden plugged to walls, and Inch deal Form
skirting 9" wide to the calculating room with inch narrow grounds and 3/4 deal plinths, scribed to floors - make good all other skirtings throughout the Dwelling House.
Doors -The Internal
doors of the Calculating and Engine Rooms to be 2" deal 4 panel molded
both sides hung with 4" Butts and forms and to have each a 7" [word
unreadable: bent/bolt?] mortice lock (Town made) the linings to be 1½
dble rebated, Beaded and feather tongued Inch deal framed Gd and OG molding round. the external Doors to be 2 inch Bd
flush and molded inside as other Doors and each to have a draw back
lock with 2 6" rod bolts and chain and run complete with fir Doorcases
5x4 properly rebated and beaded and stubbed into stone steps. The Door
in passage next Mr Babbage's to have the upper panels filled in with
Glass and the remainder of the Doors throughout to be 2 inch 4(square)
Panel 1 ¼ rebated and beaded Jamb linings Inch framed Gd and
OG molding both sides, hung with 3 Inch Butts and fitted with 7" knob
locks except Water Closet and Coal Cellar, the latter to have Norfolk
latches and lock, and the Water Closet a pulpit latch and 5 in rod bolt
complete. The privy in yard and Coal Cellar in Dwelling to have a fir
solid frame 4x4 stubbed into York Stone Step 1½ deal bead butt and
square door hung with 3 inch butts and screws, Norfolk latch, 3/4
beaded linings in the inside tongued to frame and to project to stop
plastering. The linings exceeding 9" in width to be feather tongued
those to the external doors to be of inch deal glued and beaded with
grounds to correspond with the Doors adjoining the open yard next privy
to have a 2" Bd flush both sides Door hung with 3" butts to a
proper doorcase 5x4 stubbed into York Stone Step and to have a Norfolk
Latch. The present Door in the fence wall next Mr Babbage's Garden to be
removed and rehung where shewn opposite the Carriage entrance, repair
and make good the same, also the lock.
The Entrance Door to Workshops
to be 2½ deal framed bottom panels and diminished stiles filled in with
Iron sashes and hung folding with 3 pair 4 Butts and screws stock lock
and 1 18" and 1 12" strong barrel bolt complete. Fir solid frame 7 by 5
stubbed into stone steps with beaded stops and linings inside as
described for Windows. The carriage entrance in East Street and that
between the Dwelling House and Yard to have 2½ inch framed and braced
gates filled in with 1¼ Battens in narrow widths matched and beaded hung
with Collinges patent hinges. Put a wrought Iron locking bar 3 x ½
worked on centres with Iron bolts, Lock and Staples complete also an
Iron Drag and Iron stays and hooks to keep them back when open, and to
have Oak hanging Posts 8x6 rebated beaded and properly secured to the
walls let into the ground 5ft. Put Oak spurs 5 feet long and 3 to each
Gate 6x6 molded cap on piers of Gates.
The opening from Workshops to
yard next to the mens privy to have a fir solid frame 5x4 2" deal ledged
and braced door filled in with Inch deal matched bottoms 4' wide,
Norfolk latch 10" stock lock complete 3/4 linings
round as to windows. The Gates in East Street to be hung to Posts 12x8
framed into Bressemmer and stubbed into 6[' or " ?] stone step 2 ft
square. The entrance in East Street to have 2¼ deal 4 panel Door molded
and square with metal fanlight and frame over and molded Transom proper
doorcase 6x4 and 4' butt hinges 1¼ beaded lining round, a good 10"
Drawback lock brass mounted and 2 10" bolts and chain and runner. The
opening at the end of Passage next the yard to be fitted in with iron
bars 3/4 diam and 4" apart with top and bottom horizontal rails 2 x ½
properly fixed to an Oak frame 4 x4.
The whole of the Passage to be
lined 5ft high with 1¼ matched and beaded boarded in width with beaded
capping to girt 4 inches narrow Grounds, plugged to walls and cement
skirting. The staircase from the ground floor to one pair of Dwelling
House to have 1¼ deal steps and risers with molded nosings housed into
1¼ molded wall and string board with 2" deal turned newels and 2¼
Honduras mahogany molded handrail with turned caps over newels, Inch
deal bar ballusters, similar handrail on landing with molded nosings 3/4
deal aprons round. The present staircase of Dwelling House from the one
to two pair to be altered as shewn on the Drawing and all additional
steps, handrails, balluster &c. required to be provided and the
whole made complete. The steps in the Workshop to be made of 1½ deal
rough with similar string and wall board, strong newel at bottom 4x4
champfered edges and fixed into 3" York Stone Paving 2 ft Square. 2½
deal rounded handrail with and inch square wrot iron
ballusters at every second step. Include in the Estimate £2 for a light
step ladder to ascend from the Ground floor into the small room above
the present Water Closet and Passage &c. near the Calculating room.
Sashes and Frames -The
workshops and the window opening[s] in the Calculating Room to have Fir
proper frames 5x4 with cut stops part fixed on sash and part on frame,
Oak sunk Cill 5x4 with Iron sashes (see Smith) 1¼ deal Window boards on
bearers and 3/4 deal linings round frame 4" wide scribed to wall with champfered edge.
The opening in the Kitchen and
water closet of Dwelling and the room over tool house to have deal
cased frames 3' Oak sunk Cills 1½ [word unreadable: roolo?] sashes
single hung with the best white line and brass pullies brass sash
fastening complete 1¼ window boards and beams with rounded nosings on
bearers 3x2 and Inch beaded and glued linings round to project to stop
plastering, and tongd to frame.
The Pantry to be divided from
the Kitchen by a Partition formed with deal proper cased mullions to
receive 1½ deal [word unreadable: rools?] sashes single hung with the
best white lines and brass pullies, sash fastening complete. Inch ½ deal
rounded window boards at 3ft from floor and the space underneath to be
enclosed with 1½ deal square framing fixed to the Mullions before
mentioned. The top of the sashes to be 7ft from the floor, and the span
above to be filled in with Quarters 4x2 for plastering. The door to be
of 2" deal and framed to correspond with the framing adjoining, hung
with 3½ butts and screws with 7" Iron round 3 bolts lock complete.
The Turret lights over the
Calculating and Engine room to be constructed with 4" Oak sunk and
weathered cill 9" wide raised above the lead work with Oak curb 6" by 6"
secured to the Iron flanges with 5/8 wrot
Iron straps and bolts at 3ft apart on the average. The Cill to be
mitred at the angles bolted together and prepared to receive Fir solid
mullions and head 5 by 5 prepared to receive Iron sashes (see Smith)
with headed stops as described for the workshops. The Roofs of Turrets
to have for Joists 7 x 2½ cut with proper fall, boarded as described
for other flats and Inch deal faced and OG molding on both sides. The
Turrets to have deal molding cornice round level with Oak cill with sunk
facias and 3/4 deal beaded linings level with ceiling, as shewn by the detail section.
Examine repair and rehang
where necessary all the sashes and shutters throughout the Dwelling
House, put new fastenings, nobs and furniture where required and leave
all complete: relacquer the present lock and all other brasswork in the
one pair Story.
Water Closet -in the
Dwelling House to be fitted up with deal seat and riser -Inch deal
beaded hinging stile and inch chamfered flap hung with 3" Butts and
Screws -Inch deal square skirting round with deal cradle shelf complete.
The workmens privy to have 1½
deal seat and riser with hole cut [word unreadable: ledged?] cover with
turned nob. Inch deal square skirting round and holes cut for Plumbers.
Provide and fix where directed
in the roof of the additional [building next to the Dwelling House a 2"
deal dovetailed cistern to contain 300 Gallons of Water on strong
beams, similar cistern to be fixed in Roof of Workshops and also in
Engine Room. The water closet in Dwelling House to have a 1½ deal
dovetailed cistern over to contain 50 Gallons of Water with manhole flap
and fastening complete.
Fittings -The Kitchen
to have 2" deal dresser top of the size shewn on Plan, glewed blocked
and the ends clamped and rounded fixed on 2" deal framed legs and rails
with middle rail for 4 1¼ deal drawer fronts and 3/4
dovetailed rims and bottoms. Oak slips and 1½ deal rebated runners
dovetailed into 1½ back board and facing in front ends to correspond the
drawers to have a good lock and 2 nobs to each. Inch deal Pot board on
bearers and 3/4 matched and beaded backlining up
to ceiling deal facia and molding round top 1½ deal cut standards with 4
tier of Inch shelves fixed to the boarding.
The Sink to have 2 Inch deal
framed legs and rails, and 1½ dovetailed sink 8" deep Inch deal Potboard
raised 3" above floor and 3/4 skirting, the
underside to be enclosed with 1½ deal square doors hung folding with 3½
Butts and Screws 6" rod bolt and brass turn buckle complete. Inch deal
beaded hanging stiles on top with Inch deal [word unreadable: clampled?]
flap hung with 3 Butts and screws with ½" square skirting round 7"
high.
The Pantry to have a dresser top of 1½ deal 18" wide on 1½" frame legs and rails with strong dovetailed bearers complete.
Include in the Estimate exclusive of all other fittings 20ft supl of 1¼ deal shelves and brackets, to be fixed where directed.
Plumber and Copper Smiths Work
The flats throughout to be laid with milled lead 8lb to the foot Supl
to turn up against the walls 6 inches, and dressed to form Gutters, as
shewn and also to dress over the nosing round part of the Calculating
and Engine Building the rolls to be formed by the laps in the lead and
the whole properly laid, and dressed.
The Turret lights and Gutters,
as well as those behind the Chimnies, and Skylights to be laid with
milled lead 7lb to the foot supl to turn up against the walls 6" and under the slates 10" with proper drips, rolls cesspools &c. complete
Put 5lb milled lead flashing 6
inches wide round all the parapet walls, and where required, those on
the side of the Privy Roof to be slipped flashings 12" wide and built
into the wall. The flashings round Skylights and Turret lights to be 12"
wide, properly nailed to the woodwork, and the nails painted with white
lead. The Water to be conveyed from the Roofs by 3½ Cast Iron pipes
with proper hoppers and knees, to dip into the drains, and properly
connected together and secured to the Brickwork.
Line the Cistern with 8lb cast
lead bottoms and 6lb sides to turn over the edge of the cistern 2
inches and nailed down, and soldered at the Angles.
Lay on the water from the main
with 2" strong lead service pipe with 1¼ branch pipes to serve the
cisterns, with Ball cock complete to each.
The water closet cistern to be
supplied from the nearest cistern with proper Service Waste, and other
Pipes and Ball Cock complete.
The Water Closet to be fitted
up with the patent valve aparatus with white ware basin complete,
supplied with water from the Cistern above with all the necessary
service Pipes, traps, bosses &c. complete. The soil pipe to be 4"
diameter made of milled lead 7lb to the foot supl with proper P traps to
dip into the drains with all knees &c. that may be found necessary.
The sink in Kitchen to be
supplied from the large Cistern in roof with inch service pipe with
brass cock complete. Similar cock and pipe to supply pails in yard and
Engine House, from the nearest cistern.
The Mens Privy to have a
common ware pan with trap at bottom to dip into drain, supplied with
water from the nearest cistern with brass cock complete.
The whole of the Gutters, lead
of flashings &c. of the Dwelling House to be carefully examined new
flashing put where required and the whole repaired and made perfectly
water tight.
The Eaves of Turret lights and
the whole of those of the Buildings, not shewn to have lead Gutters, to
have 4" open Copper Gutters, properly soldered at the Joints and
securely fixed with wrought iron brackets the water to be conducted to
the drains with water pipes as before described.
Mason's Work
Provide and fix all stonework before mentioned; also all other stone that may be required to complete the work.
All the external and Cellar
doorways to have solid York Stone Steps 12x7 properly set and prepared
to receive the doorcases with chamfered Edges.
The Entrance door, and
Carriage Gateway in East Street, as well as the opening at the opposite
end of Building to have similar stone steps, the steps in Passage to be
also of solid York Stone 12x7 each in one length pinned into the wall 3
inches and firmly bedded on the Ground.
Pave the whole of the Engine
House with 3" York Stone in large regular Courses bedded on brick walls
and flushes up with cement.
The Passage from East Street
and that from Calculating Room to the adjoining premises, as well as the
Mens Privy to be paved with 2½ York Stone in large regular courses on
dry rubbish bedded in Mortar and well flushed round the Walls with
Cement.
Put 3["] rubbed York Cill to
all the Windows to project 1½ before the brickwork and to extend 2
inches at each end and beyond the opening, laid weathering and throated.
Cope all the Party Fence Walls
of those of the Building with 3" York Stone 4" wider than the
Brickwork, properly weathered set and jointed in cement, cramped and run
with lead.
Include in the Estimate
£3-10-0 for a stone urinary laying on the water cock and drain complete
to be fixed in the small yard next the Mens Privy. Examine and repair
all the other Stonework throughout the premises and leave all clean and
complete at the finishing.
The Calculating Room to have a
Portland box Chimney piece of the value of £5 with hearth stone
complete but exclusive of fixing. The Kitchen to have 1½ Portland Jambs
mantle and shelf 7" wide, the latter with rounded corners, and pinned
into the wall at least 2 inches - 2½ rubbed York hearth stone and inner
hearth complete.
The Inner Room next the Pantry to have a Chimney Piece of the value of £2-10-0 including hearth Stone but exclusive of fixing.
The Chimney Pieces to be properly cramped and fixed in the most suitable manner.
Provide and fix 6" York Stone Caps to piers of Inside Gates 1'-10" Square properly weathered and set in Cement.
Put Portland Stone Plinths
under the Pilasters in front next East Street 1ft 6["] high the width
shewn 4" in thickness properly secured to the Brickwork.
Form the skew backs for Arches
forming the roof of Calculating and Engine House with solid York Stone
Steps cramped together and run with lead and splayed to receive the
Brickwork and also for the Iron tie rods hereafter described.
Plasterers Work
The ceiling in the calculating
Room those in the Dwelling House also of the entrance from East Street
to be Lathed, Plastered, floated set and twice whitened or coloured.
The walls of the Calculating
Room to be lathed with double fir Laths, plastered, floated set and
twice colored. The Walls of the Engine room, the ceiling and also the
Walls in the Dwelling House to be rendered set and twice colored or
whitened.
Make good all other Plastering
damaged throughout the Dwelling House and twice whiten the ceilings and
twice color the Attics and such of the old walls as are at present
done.
The Cornice Pilaster Blocking
&c. of Entrance front from East Street to be stuccoed with Roman
Cement jointed and twice colored the cornice to be executed according to
the detailed drawings and finished in like manner.
The Girders towards East
Street and the Yard to be mathematically tiled, and cemented, that
towards the Yard to correspond with that in East Street.
The skirting on each side of
the entrance Passage, and that in the Engine room to be executed in
Roman Cement one inch thick 9" high and finished for Paint.
The splays at bottom of recesses in front of the Calculating and Engine House to be stuccoed with Cement and colored.
Smith and Ironmongery
Provide all Ironwork mentioned
in the aforesaid specification, also all fastenings and other work that
may be required to complete the same.
Repair and oil the Locks,
Latches, bolts, hinges &c. thoughout the Dwelling House and the Iron
railing Gates &c. towards East Street.
Provide 5/8 Wrot Iron Screw Bolts at the end of principal rafters; and 3/4 wrot iron King bolts with similar bolts for slips Angle ties &c.
The cast iron springers to be
executed according to the detail drawings, with proper flanges and
stubbs at end, let into York Stone templates and run with lead.
Provide and fix where shewn on plan in roof of Calculating and Engine House Wrot Iron connecting rod 1 3/4 diamr to go through the several springers and connected to the stone work with proper screw bolts &c..
The whole of the Wrot
work to be worked out of Swedish Iron and in the best manner and the
last work executed in London approved in the presence and to the
satisfaction of the Architect before it is carried to the Works.
All the sashs in the Workshops &c. and the Turret lights to have wrot Iron sashes the bars to be worked as [7e/ye/the?] Sketch in the margin with strong wrot Iron frames hung on Centres with Quadrant fastenings, lines, pullies &c. complete.
Provide and fix a large size
Bell in Yard, with Pull brass nob and dish in East Street, similar pull
with common size Bell to Kitchen, and a pull with leaver handle from the
front room one pair to kitchen. Repair all other Bells and pulls which
at present exist, and leave all complete.
Glazier
All the Sashes Skylights
Turret lights and sash doors to be glazed with the second best Newcastle
Crown Glass well puttied and back puttied.
The laps in the Skylights are not to exceed a ¼ of an inch, and to be made perfectly water tight.
The whole of the Glass to the old and new work to be cleaned and left perfect at the completion of the Job.
Painter
All the new wood and Iron work
usually painted to be done 4 times in Oil of such common colors as may
be approved by the Architect.
The work to be previously
knotted and rubbed down and the old work prepared to receive two coats
of paint of such common colors as may be approved.
The front room one pair Dwelling House to be flatted in addition to the above number of Coats of Paint.
All the Cast and Wrot
Iron, Girders &c. to be painted 3 times in oil -previous to their
being fixed. the Railing in front towards East Street to be finished in
Visible Green.
Paper Hanger
The Room and Closet on the one
pair floor Dwelling House to be papered with paper of the value of 8
pence per yard and border of the value of 2d pr yard.
The two pair story to be papered with paper at 6d pr yard and border at 1d pr yard.
Repair all the papering which is to be colored as stated in the Plasterers Work.

Conditions of Contract
The whole of the works to
be done and completed according to the fullest intention and spirit of
the drawings and specification with the best well seasoned materials of
their respective sorts and in the most substantial and workmanlike
manner under the direction and to the satisfaction of the Architect.
The contractor is to find
and provide at his own expense all manner of Materials, Tools, Labor,
Shoring, Scaffolding, Molds, Carriage and every description of implement
necessary for the due performance of the Works, he is also to defray
all fees to District Surveyor, Surveyor of Sewers, Pavements and all
other expenses attending the opening of the Sewers &c..
Bad or improper works to
be immediately removed or altered on the requisition of the Architect or
Clerk of the Works, and all bad or improper materials to be carried
away, and in case the Contractor shall refuse or neglect to perform any
part of the said several works in such manner and with such good and
substantial materials as are hereinbefore described, or in case the bad
or improper works are not immediately altered by the Contractor, or the
works do not proceed with proper dispatch, in order that they may be
completed within the hereinafter specified time, the architect is hereby
empowered after having given 48 hours notice thereof in writing left at
the usual place of abode of the Said Contractor to employ or engage any
other person or persons to perform and execute and to find and provide
materials for the same and the cost and charges thereof shall be paid or
allowed by the Contractor or retained and deducted out of monies that
there may be due or hereafter become due to the said Contractor.
No Workmen or Unskilful
Workmen shall be employed the Architect to have full liberty to
discharge from the works and premises any man or men for incompetency or
gross misconduct and the Contractor is not to replace or employ him or
them again on these Works without the approbation of the Architect first
had and obtained in writing.
Any alterations in the
works, which may be required is to be completed within the part of the
Contractor and is not to vitiate or make void this Contract but the
value of the same whether in addition to or deduction from the Sum
Contracted for, is to be measured and valued by two respectable
Surveyors or their Umpire appointed in the usual way and the said
Valuation to be delivered to the Architect within 21 days after the
measurement has been completed.
No allowance will be made
for additional Works or alterations unless the same shall have been
ordered in writing by the Architect and should any alteration or
addition be made in day account, the said day account must be delivered
at the office of the said Architect on the Tuesday morning next ensuing
after such day work may have been done signed by the Clerk of the Works
and no account unless so signed and delivered will be admitted at the
making up of the accounts.
It is to be understood by
persons offering Tenders that no charge is to be made for Estimating the
works from the Drawings and Specification.
The works to be left clean
and perfect at the finish of the Job and all breakage or damage which
may have occurred to be made good at the Contractor's expense and all
damage or alterations done to the adjoining premises occasioned by the
execution of these works to be made good in every respect.
The whole of the Roofs to
be completely covered in the pipes fixed and water conveyances made
within ----- months from the date of the Contract and the whole of the
works to be completed on or before the ----- day of -----.
Should the Contractor fail
to complete the works within the times above specified he is to forfeit
and pay the Sum of £20 pr week for every week the works may remain
unfinished after those periods; but in case of extra work or alterations
a proportional extension of time will be allowed which extension is to
be settled by the Architect.
The Contractor is to
insure the Building from fire in the protector office in the joint
manner of -----------------------for the time being and the said
Contractor to the amount of two thirds of the Contract and which
Insurance is to be contained until the premises are certified by the
Architect to be completed as the Contractor will be considered
accountable for all loss or damage done to the Premises until that time.
Persons offering Tenders
must deliver them at the Office of Works &c. Little Scotland Yard on
or before the ----- November ensuing at ----- o'clock, after which
period no sender will be noticed. Each sender to be endorsed on the
outside "Sender for a Building to contain Mr. Babbage's Calculating
Engine &c."
